Tribute to Dr John J Sciarra

Dr John J Sciarra (Jack) March 4 1932 – July 6 2025

Past President of FIGO (1991-1994) and Editor-In-Chief International Journal of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (1986-2006)

The EBCOG family is deeply saddened to learn the news of the passing of Dr John J Sciarra, (Jack), a visionary global leader in Obstetrics and Gynaecology who championed provision of equitable, high quality services for women throughout his life.

Jack believed that access to safe, legal abortion was vital for reproductive rights, as restrictions negatively impact women’s health. He became a prominent global advocate for abortion rights and family planning, significantly contributing to training in these fields. Recognized internationally, he received the 2014 Allen Rosenfield Award from the Society of Family Planning for his lifetime achievements in international family planning. His contribution in this area of sexual and reproductive human rights is now more relevant with constitutional changes in the USA.

He served as President of FIGO (International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics) from 1991 to 1994, representing physicians in over 130 countries and several other national and international organisations. His dedication to Africa was evident through his role as chair of the Carnegie obstetrics and gynaecology program in Ghana, where he mentored many African doctors.

Jack was born in West Haven, Connecticut on March 4, 1932, to Mary Grace Sanzone and Jack Sciarra. He earned his M.D. from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1957, and spent time at Guy’s Hospital in London that inspired his passion for travel and international service. After completing a PhD in Anatomy and residency with Howard C Taylor, he became an Assistant Professor at Columbia. In 1968, Jack became the youngest Professor and Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Minnesota Medical School. In 1975; he took on the same roles at Northwestern University Medical School and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

He published over 250 papers in peer-reviewed journals and was the author or editor of 18 books. His crowning editorial achievement was serving as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) from 1985 to 2006.

He received several awards, including Fellowship of The Royal Colleges of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, as well as fellowships from Israel, India, China, Italy, and the Philippines.

After retiring, he became Vice President and one of the 50 Fellows of the International Academy of Human Reproduction (IAHR).

Jack was an exemplary leader, teacher, friend, mentor, husband, and father, known for his kindness. His wisdom has positively influenced both the global community and women’s health and rights.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; his three children, Vanessa, John and Leonard Sciarra; and his nine grandchildren.

We mourn the loss of a great friend, mentor and a human being who served the profession and the women of the world with great integrity and conviction. Those of us, who got to know him well, shall always cherish his warmth, wisdom and gentle spirit.

His legacy will live on for his work in the area of abortion care. He will be sadly missed.

 Rest in eternal peace, Jack!
